Pacific Coast Highway in a Supercar: What Nobody Tells You

California's Highway 1 — the Pacific Coast Highway — is on every driving enthusiast's list. The most celebrated stretch runs from Malibu north through Big Sur to Carmel-by-the-Sea. In theory, it is the perfect supercar road. In reality, it requires more planning than most sources tell you. We have placed clients on this road in everything from Ferraris to Lamborghinis to Porsche GT cars. Here is the honest guide.
The Best Section — And When to Drive It
The PCH between Malibu and Carmel is the section worth building a trip around — specifically the 90-mile stretch through Big Sur, where the road climbs the Santa Lucia Range and drops to the Pacific repeatedly through sweeping curves with nothing between you and the ocean but a guardrail and 300 feet of air.
The problem is traffic. Drive the Big Sur section before 9am or after 4pm. Midday is genuinely disappointing in a sports car at tourist convoy speeds. The early morning run — when the coastal fog is just lifting and you have the road largely to yourself — is one of the great drives in the world.
The Roads They Never Tell You About
PCH is the headline, but the secondary roads branching inland are where a supercar truly comes alive. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road — climbing steeply from PCH near Kirk Creek into the Hunter Liggett area — delivers 25 miles of technical mountain driving with minimal traffic and extraordinary views. Fewer than 5% of PCH travelers ever take this road. Our clients who do call it the highlight of the entire trip.
Mulholland Drive above Malibu is a legendary piece of tarmac with sweeping coastal views and technical corners that reward a good car. Plan a morning on Mulholland before heading north on PCH for a two-road day that delivers the full California driving experience.
Vehicle Selection for PCH
For the Big Sur coastal section: a convertible or Targa roof is worth considering — the views and ocean air are best experienced as open as possible. A Ferrari California T, Porsche 911 Cabriolet, or McLaren 720S Spider turns this drive into something transcendent. For Mulholland and the more technical inland roads: a closed cockpit with maximum driver feedback. A 911 GT3 or Ferrari 296 GTB will deliver the engagement these roads deserve.
Where to Base Yourself
Three nights in Malibu (Malibu Beach Inn or similar). Two nights at The Post Ranch Inn or Ventana Big Sur — among the finest hotels in California, perched on the cliffs above the Pacific. Two nights in Carmel-by-the-Sea, with a round at Pebble Beach Golf Links for groups including golfers. The combination of a supercar drive and a Pebble Beach round is a genuinely magnificent two-day experience that our clients consistently rank among their best-ever travel memories.
